Man lost was found minutes after press release sent on search and rescue

On 04-10-2014, at approximately 7:45 a.m., the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a man who identified himself as Arthur Barrett, 66 years old, from Arcata.  He reported he was lost in the woods, near Jacoby Creek Road and Upper Creek Road, Arcata.  Sheriff’s Office Dispatchers were able to obtain a latitude/longitude from the man’s cell phone and deputies are currently on scene and searching for him in the drainage. The man said his cell phone battery was low on power.

The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind hikers to tell family and friends where they are hiking, when they expect to return and to bring appropriate equipment and clothing. This time of year the weather conditions can change rapidly. Wet and cold weather can cause hypothermia. A cell phone, map or GPS is also very helpful. Keep in mind not all rural areas have cell phone coverage and cell phone batteries need to be fully charged.

Updates will be released after the man is located.

Update:

Arthur Barrett was located at 10:05 a.m., 04-10-2014, by deputies and is in good health. He was located off a trail off Jacoby Creek Road, Arcata.
